Vilayancode, March 21, 2025: In a landmark step towards environmental conservation, Wadihuda Institute of Research and Advanced Studies (WIRAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) on the occasion of World Forest Day. The collaboration aims to protect and restore the mangrove forests of Kannur District, enhancing biodiversity and ecological sustainability.
The MoU establishes a joint commitment between WIRAS and WTI to undertake mangrove plantation initiatives, conservation programs, and research collaborations. As part of the agreement, WIRAS students will actively participate in WTI’s conservation efforts by volunteering in mangrove planting and protection activities. Additionally, the partnership will facilitate expert lectures, field visits, and joint research projects on environmental conservation.
The signing ceremony was graced by esteemed dignitaries and conservation experts. Dr. Akhil R, Vice Principal of WIRAS, delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the event. The Presidential Address was delivered by Dr. Aboo Ishaque P K, Principal of WIRAS, emphasizing the institute’s commitment to sustainability and research.
The MoU was formally inaugurated by Mr. Sajan John, Head of Marine Projects at the Wildlife Trust of India. This was followed by the official handover of the MoU, symbolizing the beginning of an impactful collaboration. The Keynote Address was delivered by Mr. Ramith M, Manager and Head of the Kannur Kandal Project, Wildlife Trust of India, who highlighted the significance of mangrove conservation in mitigating climate change and coastal erosion.
The ceremony also featured felicitation speeches by Dr. Noble Jacob, Research Coordinator of WIRAS, and Mr. Rahanas T, NSS Programme Officer of WIRAS, acknowledging the partnership’s potential in fostering student involvement and ecological restoration. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Vineethkumar V, Research Director at WIRAS, expressing gratitude to all stakeholders for their invaluable contributions.
The collaboration between WIRAS and WTI marks a significant milestone in conservation efforts, ensuring active student participation in preserving Kannur’s rich mangrove ecosystem. This initiative is expected to strengthen research and field-based learning, aligning with global sustainability goals.
