The school library initiated a story reading series titled "Once Upon a Time" to cultivate a love for reading among primary students from Classes 1 to 5. This program was designed to improve reading habits, comprehension skills, and public speaking confidence. So far, seven sessions have been successfully completed, with enthusiastic participation from the students.
Each session features one selected student from a class who reads a book aloud to an audience of peers and teachers. These sessions are conducted in an interactive manner, promoting discussions and engagement with the story. The library provides a cozy and stimulating environment that enhances the overall experience.
The series has led to notable improvements in students' reading fluency, pronunciation, and storytelling skills. It has encouraged active listening and engagement, helping students develop confidence in public speaking. Additionally, there has been an increased interest in borrowing books from the library for independent reading.
Despite its success, the program has faced some challenges. Some students exhibited initial hesitation and stage fear, while others needed additional guidance with difficult words and pronunciation. Ensuring discipline during Interactive sessions also required effort from the organizers.
To build upon this progress, future plans include expanding the number of sessions to involve more students, introducing themed reading sessions, and providing preparatory guidance to boost students' confidence. Collaboration with parents is also being considered to encourage reading habits at home.
The "Once Upon a Time reading series has proven to be an effective initiative in fostering a reading culture among young learners. With its continued implementation, the school library aims to strengthen literacy skills and instill a lifelong love for books among students.
